Turning 65 in 2021? Here's how to prepare for Medicare.

Turning 65 is a big year, and it's worth celebrating because you're officially eligible for Medicare! Here are the top things to know to enroll in Medicare.

When do I need to sign up for Medicare?

The initial enrollment period (IEP) spans over a seven-month window, which begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birth month, and extends three months past the after your birth month. For example, if your birthday is May, your IEP begins on February 1 and ends August 31.

However, if your birthday is on the 1st of the month, the IEP moves forward one month. For example, if your birthday is May 1, your IEP begins on January 1 and ends July 31.

How do I sign up for Medicare?

If you already receive social security benefits, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and B. If you are not receiving social security benefits, then you will need to apply for Medicare by either calling the social security office (local offices are currently closed for walk-ins due to COVID) or enrolling online at ssa.gov. It's very important to sign up for Medicare during your initial enrollment period, otherwise you will be subject to a penalty.
